HungryGoWhere recommends hitting the trunk roads in search of Ipoh’s famed glutton street in the quaint town of Menglembu which is located between 20 to 30 minutes away from the city’s bright lights.
Open from around 6pm, here are HungryGoWhere’s picks on what you should be devouring once you discover the old charm of Jalan Tranchell and the old school delights it offers.
Pork offal porridge
If you’re visiting Menglembu on a chilly evening, then a bowl of pork porridge will be utterly satisfying. The porridge here is thick and smooth, yet you can still discern the rice bits from the porridge-white goodness.
Most patrons opt for the porridge to go with coagulated blood, or ju chap (pork offal and innards) for a bowl of porcine goodness. Feel free to ask for salted egg or mix and match to your heart’s content. Priced from RM3 per bowl, fish and chicken porridge are also available.
Chee cheong fun
Old school delights dominate this glutton street, and chee cheong fun is another popular choice for hawker food lovers. Our plate of silky smooth curry chee cheong fun came served with cuts of long beans, pork rind, green chilies, and a dash of sesame seeds – all for only RM3.
The curry reminds us of the type we used to get in school canteens – light, watery, with a very measured amount of spiciness under a thin film of oil – the kind that reminds you of the good ol’ days when food was less complicated (and cheap). We would definitely recommend having a plate of this chee cheong fun on your dining table to be shared.

What used to be a modest stall almost 30 years ago has morphed into an entire shoplot courtesy of its famous fried chicken. Wonderful Honey Chicken is a drawcard to Menglembu wai sek kai like no other and it’s easily the most satisfying side dish to go with the plethora of noodle and rice dishes that are prevalent along the street.
Perfectly fried chicken coated in sticky sweet, caramelised sauce – what’s there not to like? Drumsticks cost RM3.20, chicken wings for RM2.20 each while a whole leg for RM8 will leave the carnivore in you fully sated.
See what else Menglembu offers on its street filled with sinful offerings to the gluttons that visit.
