Taste test: Purple Monkey cheesecakes

Fresh and frozen – all in a purple box! – HungryGoWhere pic, July 8, 2015.Fresh and frozen – all in a purple box! – HungryGoWhere pic, July 8, 2015.Purple Monkey claims “bloody delicious cheesecakes” with fun, quirky names like Strawberry Hills and Peaches to Riches, so when we stumbled on their website, we just had to try them.

Orders are to be made two days before, and can either be delivered all over Klang Valley or collected from KL Sentral, Sri Hartamas, and Aman Suria. Purple Monkey’s cheesecakes are also vegetarian-friendly and egg-free!

You can order their Mini Monkeys (7 for RM75) sampler which arrived in a white box with purple doodles all over it – a fun design taking after its humorous name. The cakes were wrapped in tin foil and sat atop a light purple cardboard base.

Purple Monkey freezes its cakes to keep them fresh during transit, so you should thaw your order for 15 to 25 minutes, then cut it with a metal knife dipped in hot water (cube shapes will prevent the edges from melting as fast). Once we removed the plastic holders and took our pictures, it was time to try them all!

Though Purple Monkey’s Golden Durian is first on our list, we recommend eating it last if you plan on ordering a multitude of other cheesecakes like we did. Taking our first bite with a forkful of this cheesecake, we felt like we were eating an actual durian instead of cake. Some of us felt like there was not enough cheese, as the durian taste was overpowering.

Durian lovers would find this a wonderfully decadent cake however, as it is rich in taste, flavour, and texture (incredibly creamy). We also enjoyed the cake’s crunchy base with the durian flavour.

Eating a forkful of the Toblerone Dark Chocolate cheesecake was like biting into a piece of cocoa-heaven. The chocolate cheese mix was thick, creamy, and decadent. The chocolate shavings on top were a very nice touch and made the cocoa flavours even more intense.

The only thing that brought our tastebuds back down to earth was the base – though it had a good amount of saltiness, it was bit too apparent when eaten with the chocolate cheesecake. Apart from that, this was one of the flavours that we would definitely order again.

Purple Monkey’s Sinful Mango V2.0 had a beautiful arrangement of sliced mangoes on top, shaped to look like a budding rose. We were very impressed with the presentation, and the mango slices tasted extremely fresh.

Purple Monkey also has the limited edition Very Sinful Mango cheesecake that uses seasonal Indian mangoes instead of regular ones, but this flavour is not available with the Mini Monkeys sampler. Eaten with the cheesecake, the mango was slightly overpowering, but we still loved it. Again, the cheesecake on its own was not mixed with any mango fruit or flavouring.

Finally, we came to Purple Monkey’s most basic cheesecake, Say Cheese! This flavour is only available with the Mini Monkeys sampler, but all the other flavours are available in regular sizes (RM80-RM100).

Say Cheese! had a milder flavour; surprisingly, without the added fruits and flavours, the cheesy taste didn’t come out as strongly. The mix was also a bit grainy, though it could just be ice crystals that formed in the freeze. The base had a good salty crust, and for once, we welcomed it with open arms. We reasoned that since the cakes were made to order and were relatively fresh, it made sense to have a number of Say Cheese! cake bases to be topped with different fruits.

Other flavours available at Purple Monkey Cheesecakes include Cookie Addict, Peaches to Riches, and Blueberry n Cheese. Read on for our thoughts on these choices. – July 8, 2015.
