Every Sundae all sugar, coolness but misses the mark

I gathered all my friends and made my maiden visit to Every Sundae when it just opened in mid-2015, but sadly, was rather unimpressed. My second, more recent visit with another group of friends, was made with high hopes that it had overcome its growing pains.

One of the more popular offerings at Every Sundae is their YOLO (RM16), a relatively new item introduced in December 2015 to cash in on the salted egg yolk craze in anything from croissants to pasta. 

The carpe diem sentiment of the acronym “You Only Live Once” might be encapsulated in the indulgent combination of a Thai coconut and salted egg yolk soft gelato twist on a curry leaf eggette (a spherical egg-based waffle) base with lashings of salted egg yolk lava.

The salted egg yolk in this dessert is on the sweet side to complement the flavours of the subtle Thai coconut. It came as a bit of a surprise to me as I expected a burst of saltiness. 

What really made YOLO for me was the fragrant curry leaf eggette which, when combined with the salted egg yolk, really did remind me of a stir-fried salted egg yolk dish you get at Chinese restaurants. The eggette balanced out the sweet soft gelato and everything worked very well together.

I needed a palate cleanser after that heart-clogging but oh-so-satisfying dessert, and for that, I went with the passion pitcher (RM10), a fizzy passionfruit juice with a tangy lemon zing to cut through the sweetness.  

When it comes to the dishes I didn’t like, Sweet Day (RM18) came out the top of my list. Salted caramel soft gelato studded with honeycomb with a drizzle of honey butterscotch sat perched on top of a home-made cone. White cotton candy surrounded the cone as if the ice cream was floating on clouds. 

Whimsical it certainly was, but the dessert definitely didn’t take me to cloud nine as the combo was way too sweet, drowning out even the saltiness of the salted caramel. There was no depth, no dimension and no flavour other than the sickly-sweetness of sugar. 

The cotton candy, too, was more leathery than cottony, having hardened slightly after being moulded around the cone.

Every Sundae also lets you customise your own dessert, choosing from bases, flavours, toppings and sauces. A base and soft gelato combo will already cost you RM12 while a soft gelato twist, toppings and sauces are all an additional RM2. 

Instead of the soft gelato (like soft serve), we went with their tofu fa gelato, which was denser and creamier, with a Belgian waffle base and espresso brownie cubes (RM14). 

To our surprise, we only got one measly waffle square which didn’t justify its expensive price tag. 

While the gelato was nice, the brownie cubes had no trace of coffee flavour and was largely forgettable. 

Perhaps we picked a combo that didn’t work but the pricing definitely put us off.

Our final bill for four drinks and four desserts came up to RM81 and this was after the 20% discount the cafe gives out on rainy days. And all we really remember from our outing was that everything was just too sweet. 

Every Sundae’s customisable desserts are undoubtedly a novel idea but the execution of it falls short. The varied elements on their own might sound good but the combos don’t always work and sometimes end up merely looking cool. 

I do note that the cafe is still wildly popular with customers steadily trickling in despite the rain on our recent visit. 

The appeal might still be alive and well but I think I’ll stick with their single scoop gelato flavours if I ever make my way there again. – February 1, 2016.
