Dining at Kafe Warisan, Avenue K

One hour is broken down to making your way to and fro the food outlet of choice, getting a table and ordering, eating and paying for your meal (I’m sensing plenty of nods here). And there’s only so many times that you can eat at the same place!

After a series of lunch sessions at the Avenue K food court, my KL "makan kakis" and I changed course and ventured downstairs to Kafe Warisan instead.

Located at the concourse of the mall, Kafe Warisan serves local favourites such as nasi lemak, roti jala, roti bom and nasi kukus with a selection of meat dishes.

Worries were in vain: service was efficient and the waiters remained cool and good natured in spite of the chaos.

The nasi kukus ayam goreng berempah (RM13.65), a signature dish garnished with pickled side salad and egg topped with gravy, looked and tasted pretty good.

We think the fried chicken (only thigh portions served) ruled the roost, with delicious crispy spiced skin wrapped around succulent, freshly fried flesh.

The fried chicken is also available a la carte for RM7.30.

While we enjoyed the spiciness of the lamb, we felt that it was a little on the chewy side. The dish is also served with a side of tangy salad and hard-boiled egg, and topped with spicy gravy.

Kafe Warisan’s mee siam wasn’t tangy and spicy like the mee siam we were accustomed to. Instead, it tasted like regular fried noodles, which was a disappointment. Thankfully, the signature spiced fried chicken and keropok made up for this rather lacklustre entry.

The roti jala was a little doughy, but not completely dismissible (bad day in the kitchen, perhaps). We had ours with beef rendang (RM13.75), but diners who don’t eat beef also have a choice of chicken curry (RM11.65) or lamb mysore (RM13.25).

We really loved the quick and efficient service and will come back to try other dishes – and have more of that delicious fried chicken!

Oh, did I mention the thick, frothy teh tarik (RM3.30)? Beautifully made and just on the right side of "kurang manis".

Doubtless, we’ll be back for seconds! – January 21, 2016.
