Bisque Cafe

Bisque is a bakery turned cafe, where there is only outside seating, though the decor is simply charming. The fried chicken waffles here consists of unapologetically, downright dirty Southern-style waffles. They are good-sized, savoury and dense, perfect for soaking up the honeyed maple syrup drizzled to your liking over the deep-fried breaded chicken cutlets.

Le Pont Boulangerie

This spot off Old Klang Road is a three-storey bakery and café that serves up great dishes, pastries and coffee. The Le Pont Boulangerie waffles (RM11.90) here are simple amazing, fluffy yet sturdy, cut into geometric fascinations and dusted with powdered sugar, perfect for dipping. And dip you should! It comes with saucers of mixed berry jam, whipped butter, ice cream or chocolate sauce.

The Owls Cafe

The Owls Cafe is home to many tiny ceramic or crafted owls. Love them or hate them, these itty-bitty mascots litter the tables and walls with their adorable beaks and wide-open eyes.

We tested out the Sally Salmon (RM24) a large herb-based waffle made of connected circular waffle petals. Topped creatively with halved cherry tomatoes, a big bed of scrambled eggs, and slices of fresh salmon arranged in a pale hibiscus, they finished it with an earthy, aromatic drizzle of truffle oil. We’ll be back owls, we’ll be back.

The Border City Cafe & Gaming

This joint serves up buttery, fresh waffles with creamy New Zealand's Natural ice cream (RM14.90,) drizzled with syrupy goodness. Here is our waffle getting attacked by King of Tokyo monsters as we enjoy hours of game play of their card and board games (RM6 per hour!) in one of the better gaming cafés that serve food in town!

Sitka is an European restaurant on the foodie haven of Jalan Batai that serves up a Smoked Duck Confit waffle (RM38), accented with a runny sunny-side-up egg, and maple butter churned with mustard seeds. This savoury dense waffle is one of our favourites, we'll definitely be back to revisit this haunt again!

S.O.C. Cafe

At the industrial-themed Snow or Coffee cafe in Wangsa Maju, comes a unique combo of light, snow-ice desserts and thick mugs of coffee, but for this piece, we focused on their waffles!

They had the usual offering of chocolate and coffee flavoured waffles, but we zoomed in on the black sheep immediately. Ours came as an edible mosaic of kiwi, banana, vanilla ice cream, honey, and cornflakes, like a juicy rainbow in your mouth!

Two Sons Bistro

Two Sons Bistro has a unique Philly cheese steak waffle, and though it may not match up to the 40 years of rivalry between the two original Philly Cheese Steak makers in Philadelphia itself, we’d like to say it’s probably the closest you can get here in KL.

We do think the best thing about the open-faced waffle when we finally got it were the slices of steak used by Two Sons Bistro. The waffles themselves were dense and thinner than average however, and slathered a little too thickly in mayo. They were topped with some cherry tomato halves, jalapeños and Monterey Jack Cheese, with some chopped caramelized onions. The entire dish was very filling, but the price tag did weigh a little heavy at RM23.

Genebin&zo

When we first ate at Genbebin&zo, the new cafe in Kuchai Lama, we got a satisfying plate of Japanese curry rice. We later returned to get the interestingly-named Broken Heart (RM14,) a light and fluffy chocolate waffle topped with banana slices, blueberries & premium ice cream.

We think they meant for it to be a comfort binge for broken-hearted ex-lovers, but they may have seriously underestimated the average tubs of ice cream needed for a broken heart to heal, unless they did and expected repeat customers of course.

According to their staff, B.B.C stands for Bacon, Banana, Cornflakes Ice Cream (RM16,) and that is what arrived in all its decadent glory. Standing Theory carries chocolate and vanilla flavoured artisan ice cream from Fat Baby, a small-batch Malaysian ice cream maker. The fluffy waffles and salty, smoked bacon was crisp, bringing out the best of the creamy bananas and sweetness of the gula Melaka in contrast, a wonderful combination with the cold ice cream as it slips down your throat.

Inside Scoop

Inside Scoop has a huge range of delicious ice-cream flavours, like pistachio, durian, and even teh tarik! These are really the star of the show. Pair any one with their airy, light waffles to get a heavenly experience unlike any other. Of course, if you prefer the crunch and munch as much as we do, then try their modest waffle cones as well.
