'The Travel Book', by Lonely Planet Kids. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, September 29, 2015.Lonely Planet is set to release a new collection of travel books created to inspire curiosity and wanderlust in children while they’re still young.
In “The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World,” each country is given a page spread that teaches kids about its unique culture, language, food and geography.
Children learn fun facts like which country is home to a giant tower of sticky buns and what a bokikokiko is (a Christmas Island warbler).
Adult readers may recognise the title as the children’s version of the original Travel Book released in 2011 for adults, which likewise takes readers around the world.
Another new addition to the kids collection includes “How to Be an International Spy: Your Top Secret Guide to Espionage,” a volume that teaches kids about the gadgets used in the shadowy secret service underworld and how to crack codes.
“You Rule! Create Your Own Country” invites readers to create a new country from scratch: kids can make up their own laws, design their own flag, and draw up borders.
In addition to inspiring curiosity about the world in little minds, travel guides also serve as good distractions for parents during long road trips and plane rides.
Amazon.com’s current list of best-selling travel books for kids include titles from the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series, a colouring book that recreates scenes from a plane, and the classic, “This is...” series from Miroslav Sasek, which portrays cities like Paris, London and New York through the eyes of a child.
