Teenager sues Khazanah over Cambridge scholarship

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — A student sued Khazanah Nasional Berhad and three others at the High Court here for not giving him the “Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship”.

Chan Chow Wang filed through his lawfirm the suit on behalf of his child Chan Xian Yao, Bernama Online reported.

The 19-year-old named as defendants Khazanah chief executive officer Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar; its director Azman Mohd Hussein; Khazanah; and Yayasan Khazanah.

Chan is seeking to invalidate the three scholarships already given out by the national investment company. Further to that he claims compensation and damages for distress and embarrassment due to being rejected.

The teenager who has been offered to study chemical engineering via natural sciences at Cambridge University beginning  this October, alleges the defendants failed to hold a fair and proper selection process.

Yayasan Khazanah apparently emailed him his rejection without providing reasons.

According to Chan, in a June 11 news report the defendants announced three recipients of the scholarships without releasing details like names, courses picked and academic merit.

Since 2009 the Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship has helped Malaysians with excellent academic results to study in Cambridge.
