"The appointment is the prerogative of the government," Petronas said in a statement.

The Cabinet today unanimously agreed to terminate the appointment of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as adviser to Petronas.

The Prime Minister's Office said in a statement the Cabinet felt that since Dr Mahathir no longer supported the government, he should not hold any position associated with it.

"The Cabinet discussed the actions of the former prime minister, particularly in launching the 'Citizens' Declaration' jointly with opposition party leaders last week," it added.

Dr Mahathir was appointed Petronas adviser after he stepped down as prime minister in 2003.
