Illustrator McGuire wins France’s top comic book prize

American illustrator Richard McGuire (pic) was awarded France’s top comic book prize on Saturday at the prestigious Angouleme festival.

McGuire, 58, won the “Fauve d’Or” prize for his ground-breaking graphic novel HERE, which concerns a single corner of a room and the events that have taken place there over centuries.

The artist, also a regular contributor to New Yorker magazine, was absent from the ceremony.

HERE was published by Gallimard in France.

The Angouleme festival, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city in southwestern France, is one of the world’s biggest comics events.

French readers’ appetite for comic books is boundless, with 35 million sold in 2014. – AFP, February 1, 2016.
